WCS hosts instructional rounds for dozens of educators from across the state

Educators from districts similar to Warren City Schools gathered at Warren G. Harding High School on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023, as part of Ohio Mid-Sized Schools Leadership Collaborative instructional rounds.

Superintendents, teachers and curriculum leaders from around the state visited Warren classrooms and provided feedback to district staff and the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce about student engagement, teacher feedback, and academic content.

“Although no two districts are exactly alike, it is a great opportunity to be able to collaborate with representatives of school districts similar to Warren and that have similar concerns,” explained Warren’s Chief Academic Officer Wendy Hartzell.

Instructional rounds, adapted to education from the field of medicine, provide opportunities for educators to work collaboratively to identify and solve common challenges related to teaching and learning.

Earlier in the month, Warren school leaders were among nearly 50 educators who spent time at Lima City Schools as part of that district’s instructional rounds.

In Warren, educators met at Harding for introductions before breaking into groups and visiting all district buildings. After the instructional rounds were completed, the groups met back at the high school to discuss their experiences and common themes which will be utilized to generate recommendations for areas of academic improvement.

McGuffey Double Take: Six sets of 2nd-grade twins have students, staff looking twice

Second-grade classes at the McGuffey PK-8 School are experiencing a double dose of smiles, laughter, creativity and, well, other stuff this school year.

McGuffey has six sets of twins in the second grade! Although some are fraternal twins, there are enough of them who look alike to cause some of us to look twice. You might ask or think to yourself, “Didn’t I just see you out in the hall?” Or, “Have you been sitting here this whole time?”

The McGuffey twins take it all in stride and have become accustomed to all of the double takes and second glances. They’ve patiently given the rest of us time to adjust to seeing double. Last year, there were five sets. The addition of another brings us to six!

WGH culinary students serve the Warren community with a touch of ‘sweetness’

October is an exciting time in the Principles of Foods cooking classes as students participate in “Make a Difference October.”

Recently, five students – Faith Mason, Darien Monday, Erica Brooks, Jurnee Brantley and She’Ayla Allen – delivered 20 pans of caramel apple crisp to the Warren Family Mission.

Each week throughout the month of October, in observance of “Make A Difference,” students in the cooking class prepare baked good items and then, as a group, decide how much of their baked goods to donate to nonprofit organizations in Warren.

Students spent time researching local nonprofit organizations. The organizations with the most votes receive the donations over the next few weeks as a way to give back to the Warren community.

Students contact the organizations to arrange the drop off, work in their lab groups to prepare the baked good items and then drop off the items with their instructor, Mrs. Scarmack.
