As Superintendent of the Warren City Schools, it is my honor to welcome you to our district. As an educator in Warren City Schools for twenty years, I have been a Elementary School Teacher, Middle School Assistant Principal, Elementary Principal, PK-8 Lead Principal, High School Curriculum Supervisor of School Improvement, Associate Superintendent and currently Superintendent. These experiences in our district have prepared me to better understand the academic and social needs of our students, their families and community.
The Warren City Schools is working with support from the Ohio Department of Education to create goals and action steps designed to improve student academic success in many ways. Together with our staff we have created our District Focused Plan to address how we plan to achieve this goal. Each of our five buildings have also developed a Building Focused Plan in alignment with the goals of our district.
Currently our District offers Preschool programs at all four of our PK-8 buildings and starting in August 2016, we have expanded our program to Warren G. Harding High School. Warren City Schools is committed to supporting our youngest learners! Children ages three and four years old have the ability to begin their learning experience in on of our schools. This is an important first step towards improving student academic success.
In our PK-5 grade levels, our teachers and administrators are receiving targeted professional development in reading strategies through Ohio State University and the Literacy Collaborative Framework, a research based program designed to provide a balanced literacy experience for ALL students. Our administrators are tasked with monitoring the fidelity with which the strategies are being taught in our K-5 classrooms.
Our students in the middle school grades 6-8 are attending classes in a revised schedule designed specifically to increase instruction time and reduce the amount of transitions within the school day. Additionally, our students are being supported by our Skill and Support Classrooms (SSC) which are designed to address behavioral and social-emotional concerns that interfere with learning. Students referred to the SSC receive intervention to better support their needs with goals of returning back to the academic classroom in a timely manner. These goals are consistent with our District Focused Plan and Social Emotional Learning initiatives.
One of our areas of focus at Warren G. Harding High School is transitioning our ninth grade students from middle school to high school. We believe that starting the high school experience correctly will yield success for the years to come. Additionally, our centralized high school offers programs and experiences superior to other educational experiences. Our Advanced Placements and College Credit Plus courses, Athletics, Robotics team, and WSCN-TV are just a sample of the outstanding experiences students participate in at Warren G. Harding High School.
As Superintendent of the Warren City Schools, it is important to me that the academic success of our students improves over the next several years. All of our students deserve a high quality educational experience, an experience that starts with preschool opportunities and, over their academic experience, prepares them for College and Career Readiness.
Mr. Steve Chiaro
