WGH students shine at Twenty Under 20 Banquet

Eight Warren City students were among Trumbull County’s top 20 individuals under the age of 20 recognized at a banquet on Wednesday, Dec. 11.

WGH’s Courtney Wilcox made it into the top five. Each of the top five recipients received a portion of $1,000 to be donated to a charity of their choice.

Harding students Samantha Barkley, Jane Faulk, Sophie Gardner, Sarah Herko, Yurielis Navarro Jimenez and Sonia Pitts and Nicole Ruckman were also among this year’s 20 recipients.

Each year, the event, co-sponsored by the Tribune Chronicle, Akron Children’s and its newest sponsor, AVI Foodsystems, recognizes 20 students who have gone into their communities to make a difference in the lives of others. This was the event’s 12th year.

The committee weighted 50% of the students’ overall score as leadership, 25% as extracurricular activities and 25% as academic achievement when they chose the winners out of more than 50 nominations. Each of the honorees received a flame award and a one-year digital subscription to the Tribune Chronicle.

WGH Quiz Bowl teams score high at TCTC event

The Harding Quiz Bowl teams competing at the TCTC academic challenge tournament Saturday, December 7, 2024, made impressive scores while competing against more than a dozen teams from across Trumbull County.

The A team, consisting of Rose Strother, Zavier Taff and Sophie Gardner went all the way through to the semi-finals and beat Girard with a score of 44-37 to take 3rd place overall.

The field represented 16 teams from around the county. Harding’s B team of Daniel Long, Eliana Burker, and Donovan Stringer also did a great job making it to the 5th round before being eliminated.

Lincoln program helps students, families through holiday grieving process

A new program at the Lincoln PK-8 School is helping students and families who are experiencing grief this holiday season.

The program kicked off Wednesday, December 4, 2024, with a session designed to provide support, resources and an awareness of how difficult time of the year can be for those grieving or experiencing loss.

School counselor Suzanne Goodyear planned and organized the event. About 25 PK-8 students/families registered to attended on Wednesday. Participants made a craft and received a resource bag and refreshments.

WCSD Announces 2024 Winter Concert Season

The 2024 Warren City Schools Winter Concert Season will kick off at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024, with a performance by the Willard PK-8 School Band and Choir.

Concerts will run through Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2024, when the Warren G, Harding High School Choirs perform at 7 p.m.

WCS students help celebrate families on National Adoption Day

Warren City Schools students helped area families celebrate National Adoption Day on Friday, November 22. 

Members of the newly formed Student Leadership club WGH Epsilon Rho joined Judge James A. Fredericka and his staff at Trumbull County Probate Court to provide a memorable experience to the families as the adoptions became official.  

The students, dressed to fit the Super Mario Bros. and friends theme, took pictures with the families and painted children’s faces.

Lincoln PK-8 students designed Mario-themed photo props for families to enjoy.

Two Trumbull County families officially adopted three children. Statewide, more than 5,000 adoptions were finalized on November 22.

Emotionally speaking: Families discuss emotional triggers during WCS’ SEL event

Some of our preschool, kindergarten and 1st grade families recently gathered for an InsideU Adventure, based on understanding social-emotional learning (SEL). 

Families learned about a free, web based app, called InsideU, which was created by the Renee Crown Wellness Institute/ University of Colorado Boulder and inspired by Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out. 

Research shows that children who understand emotional responses do well academically. Families played games, made a Memory Ball, and discussed emotional triggers with their children. 

The event was held in multiple sessions on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2024, at Warren G. Harding High School.

Some of the students’ teachers, dressing for their parts, represented various emotions such as sadness, disgust, and joy.

WGH Health Department preps & certifies 21st Century teacher in first aid, CPR

The Health Department at Warren G. Harding High School recently prepared Warren City Schools’ 21st Century Community Learning teachers for emergencies they might encounter. 

The high school Health Department prepared and certified the teachers in first aid and CPR during the districtwide Nov. 5, 2024, Waiver/Professional Learning Day.

Program focuses on ‘Thriving Futures’ during Thrive Mahoning Valley & OH WOW! Science Center visit to Jefferson

THRIVE Mahoning Valley representatives on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2024, presented an assembly at the Jefferson PK-8 School that focused non-renewable versus renewable energy and ways in which the students can fight climate change.

Representatives from OH WOW! The Roger & Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science & Technology were also on hand to visit the school’s science rooms and assist the students with various activities designed to teach them about climate change.
