The Warren G. Harding Band program is proud to announce that Antwan Howard, a senior at Warren G. Harding High School, has been selected to perform with the All-State Jazz Ensemble on Alto Saxophone.
Antwan, one of only two musicians selected for this position, was among a large number of students to audition for the 2019 OMEA (Ohio Music Education Association) All-State Ensembles earlier this year. Students were required to prepare several selections and solos to record and submit by June 1 for evaluation. Professional musicians from across the state ranked the students.
WGH Senior Jordan Ringold was selected as an alternate member of the percussion section. In the event that a student is unable to perform, Jordan will step in with one of the All-State groups. Being selected as an alternate is quite an accomplishment considering the number of students who applied, explained Reid Young, Director of Bands at WGH.
Antwan was a student at Willard PK-8 School and is currently one of the drum majors for the ‘Raider’ Marching Band. Jordan was a student at McGuffey PK-8 and is currently the head drummer of the ‘Raider’ Marching Band. Antwan – and possibly Jordan – will to travel to Cleveland in late January to prepare for concerts featured as part of the 2019 OMEA Professional Development Conference.

Dr. Tyrone Howard, a professor in the graduate school of education and information studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), helped Warren City School District kick off its 2018-19 Equity Initiative for ALL students.
Dr. Howard spoke to hundreds of district employees Friday, Aug. 17, ahead of the first day of school on Tuesday, Aug. 21. The day’s events included discussions on WCS’ foundation in Social-Emotional Learning.
Dr. Howard’s research examines culture, race, teaching and learning. He has published several bestselling books, including “Expanding College Access for Urban Youth” and is the director/founder of the Black Male Institute – an interdisciplinary cadre of scholars, practitioners, community members and policymakers at UCLA dedicated to improving the educational experiences and life changes of males of color.
Dr. Howard was named the recipient of the 2015 UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award. In 2016 and 2017, he was listed by Education Week as one of the 60 most influential scholars in nation.
He advised WCS’ teachers to empathize with their students, but to hold them accountable and set expectations high. He told those gathered inside the gymnasium at Warren G. Harding High School that it is important to recognize and be willing to openly discuss differences and similarities among various cultures and races.
Later in the day, Dr. Howard joined U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Howland, and Warren City Schools Superintendent Steve Chiaro for a Community Conversation in the WGH High School library.
Members of 100 Community Men of Warren and volunteers from various organizations joined school leaders as they greeted and cheered for students the first day of school.
The effort, led by Pastor Todd Johnson of Second Baptist Church in partnership with the United Way of Trumbull County and Warren City School District, brought volunteers from various organizations to Warren G. Harding High School early the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 21. Volunteers then headed to the district’s four PK-8 Schools – Jefferson, McGuffey, Lincoln and Willard – to greet students attending those buildings.
This year marked the second for 100 Community Men of Warren to participate in the United Way’s ongoing effort help the district kick off a new school year.
A Warren G. Harding High School alumnus has been named the new head boys
varsity basketball coach.
The Warren City School Board of Education hired Warren City School Class of 1995 graduate Gabe Bubon Tuesday night.
Bubon has worked in higher education 13 years. He served as interim head coach of the men’s basketball team at Point Park University in Pittsburgh (October 2016-June 2017) before stepping into the head coaching position there in July 2017.
Previously, he was Point Park’s assistant head basketball coach of the men’s team; head coach of men’s and women’s golf; and community director of campus life. Prior to working at Point Park, Bubon was sports counselor for the Allegheny County Parks Department.
Bubon replaces Andy Vlajkovich, who last month announced he planned to accept a position at Canton McKinley High School.
“Gabe’s hiring provides our district with an individual who is familiar with our community, understands the tradition and expectations of Warren G. Harding basketball and has demonstrated the ability to be a leader of young men, both academically and athletically,” said William Nicholson, Warren City Schools Athletic Director.
Bubon said he is “extremely excited” to be given the opportunity to return to his hometown as
head boys basketball coach at Warren G Harding.
“The City of Warren played a major role in making me the person I am today. After 13 years of coaching at the college ranks, I feel it is time for me to return to the city of Warren and help develop the young men of Warren on and off the basketball court,”

“After coming in and meeting with Athletic Director Nicholson and Principal Dante Capers, I have no doubt that this is the right move for me and the Warren G. Harding Basketball Program. I want to build on what has been decades of tradition and pride in Warren Basketball. I couldn’t be happier to have this opportunity.”
The Warren G. Harding football team received a surprise visit from Cleveland Brown’s wide receiver Jarvis Landry. Landry presented the team with new Xenith helmets for the upcoming season. The visit was part of the Brown’s Helmet program, along with Xenith, University Hospitals and the Ohio Lottery, who chose Warren G. Harding as the recipient of the Xenith helmets.
In addition to presenting the team with the helmets, Landry had a personal and sincere conversation with the team about his life and his love for the game.
