Teachers across the district recently participated in professional learning activities focused on social-emotional learning.
The professional learning day was designed to allow educators to examine brain research to illustrate how social-emotional learning and trauma-informed classroom management practices can work together to create classrooms where students are ready to engage in learning.
The training is one example of the district’s ongoing efforts to meet the needs of the entire child.
Jefferson PK-8 first grade students have been enjoying practicing their phonics skills with a twist, and a twirl for that matter.
Students in Mrs. Haswell’s class had to pronounce the phonemes displayed on the flash card: A correct response would earn a roll of the die to determine how many stations the student was able to advance in the “Sensory Hallway”.
According to Jefferson Campus Leader Carrie Boyer, the Sensory Hallway has been around since 2019 and was created to allow students to take a “brain break” from learning and increase physical activity while improving large motor skills. This creative learning activity gave students a chance to exercise out some late afternoon restlessness while reinforcing the phonics skills of letter ID and letter sound ID.
The Warren G. Harding High School Symphonic Band was selected to perform on stage with Dallas Brass Nov. 9 at Packard Music Hall.
The Harding band joined the ensemble for the selection “American Tableau. “The Dallas Brass performance was part of the Warren Civic Music Association’s 2021-22 concert series.
Members of Dallas Brass also spent some time earlier in the day working with and performing for students at Warren G. Harding High School. Several of Harding’s Symphonic Band members received some pointers on performing in small ensembles.
During its travels, Dallas Brass often selects a local high school band from the community in which the ensemble is performing to join the group on stage. Harding students previously appeared with the ensemble at the Packard during a concert in 2015.
Dallas Brass has toured extensively across the country. Founder and artist director Michael Levine said the ensemble seeks to entertain while also educating and inspiring young musicians. Dallas Brass has worked with some 300,000 students in more than 2,500 concerts, rehearsals and clinics since the ensemble’s inception in1983.
We are pleased to announce that Warren City Schools’ Jill Merolla, Supervisor of Community Outreach and Grant Development, will be sharing information about the district’s Social-Emotional Learning Programming during a virtual learning event Nov. 9 with SEL4Ohio (Social Emotional Learning Alliance for Ohio).
We recognize that a focus on children’s, and indeed whole school communities’ social and emotional development, is vital to well-being and maximizing potentials.
Ms. Merolla, along with Sue Rowe of Toledo Public Schools, will offer examples of more than a decade of work each of their school districts has done to expand and integrate social and emotional learning.
The program, “The “How” of Social and Emotional Learning Implementation:In Districts and School Communities,” will also feature internationally known speaker Karen VanAusdal, who will discuss what frameworks, tools and resources can assist these efforts.
In her 35 years in education, Ms. Merolla has worked as a teacher, an elementary and middle school principal, and a central office administrator. Among her many current roles, she is the Program Manager for the CASEL Skills for Life Initiative brought to the District in 2010 by U.S. Congressman Tim Ryan. Ms. Merolla continues to be responsible for the initiative’s funding and the District’s SEL training of over 450, PK-12, teachers.
The Warren City School District has received several concerns recently regarding student behavior at the district’s home varsity football games.
As a result, the district is announcing several protocols, procedures and expectations that will be in place for all WCS students and guests who wish to attend the remaining home games:
All PK-8 School aged children and guests will need to be accompanied by a responsible adult at the football game. It is expected that children sit in the stands with this adult.
Prior to entering Mollenkopf Stadium, each PK-8 School aged child will need to register with their accompanying adult at one of the four designated tables.
Registration: Each child and adult with a game event ticket will need to provide the accompanying adult’s phone contact information, sign in and receive a wristband to be worn for the duration of the game. PK-8 School aged youth without a wristband will not be permitted into the event and will be removed from the event if their wristband is removed.
PK-8 School aged children are expected to sit withtheir accompanying adult during the game.
WGH Students will continue to follow the same game day procedures as have been communicated by the school administrators and staff this season.
These changes are being made so our loyal fans and WCS families can have an enjoyable game day experience supporting our WGH Raider Football TEAM, WGH Marching Band and Cheerleaders. We appreciate and expect your support in helping us achieve this goal for all of our students in the Warren City Schools.
