Warren City School District has revised its food distribution schedule to include new sites and times. The new schedule take effect Monday, march 15, 2021.

The serving time at each site is 12:15 to 12:45 p.m.

The locations are:

WCS Families and Staff:
It is nearly one year since public schools in the State of Ohio were ordered to close due to COVID 19. Over this time we have experienced ups, downs, spikes, valleys and plateaus just like a roller coaster. During this time every one of us experienced various challenges. Even though we know children are resilient, the challenges our youth have faced academically, socially, and emotionally over the past year will take some time for them to overcome.

It is with this in mind, along with the safety, health and well-being of our students in the Warren City Schools that we are excited to announce a return to five days per week instruction for students in hybrid groups A and B in grades K-11 starting Monday, March 15, 2021! At this time WGH Seniors will remain on a hybrid schedule unless Mr. Capers recommends an alternative schedule.

Last evening I presented to the Warren City School District Board of Education the framework of our plan for hybrid students to return. We are aligning the five days per week return to school with the start of the fourth nine weeks. Currently about 2/3 of our students are participating in hybrid in person learning and about 1/3 are doing so through full online/remote instruction. Our schools will be operating on average at 2/3 capacity.

We will continue to utilize and maximize recommended health and safety guidelines consistent with those recommended by our local health officials. Students and adults will be required to wear facial coverings at all times unless permitted to remove them during a “mask break” or while actively eating or drinking. Plexiglass desk shields are available for student and teacher desks and during lunch times. Hand sanitizer and sanitizing stations are most everywhere in our schools and well supplied. Social distancing of 3-6 feet will be observed at all times consistent with the Ohio Department of Health’s acceptance of the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations. We are confident we can maintain the mandated health and safety standards for our students and staff provided health conditions remain consistent.

There will be some adjustments to our student school day. Start times at all schools will remain the same however dismissal times will change as indicated below:
WGH Dismiss at 1:35 pm, Bus departure at 1:40 pm
Lincoln & McGuffey Dismiss at 2:20 pm, Bus departure at 2:25 pm
Jefferson & Willard Dismiss at 3:05 pm, Bus departure at 3:10 pm

While we know and understand this schedule change may cause disruption to family schedules, we believe that the academic, social and emotional benefits to our students is critically important and needs to be our priority. This schedule change will enable us to have face to face in person instruction with our students five days per week and more than double learning time in all core content areas. We believe this change will have a significant impact on student learning as we close out our scheduled school year and move towards summer intervention and academic support programs for our students in the month of June (More information on our plans for extended learning opportunities for our students will be provided to families after spring break).

Over the next week and a half we will be preparing for the adjustments to accommodate the combining of hybrid A and B student groups. We ask families to be patient with us as we work to accomplish this task. If you have questions or concerns I ask that next week you contact your child’s Principal directly by phone, email or other means that works best for you. Please make sure you check for communications from WCS or your child’s school so you can be most informed. We will post district wide communications to the WCS website and send via the email account provided by families through Final Forms. School specific messages will also be sent to the email address submitted through Final Forms and through the Remind App (PK-8 Schools).

Warren City Schools

The Warren City School District, in partnership with Akron Children’s Hospital, on Wednesday, Feb. 17, facilitated COVID-19 vaccinations for 112 essential employees who work in the district.

On Friday, Feb. 26, Akron Children Children’s Hospital will administer vaccines to approximately 425 additional Warren City School District employees, finishing the first round of this two-step process.

Thank you to everyone who has assisted in the vaccination process that has already proved to be a great success for Warren City Schools.

Warren City School District received final confirmation today, Feb. 17, 2021, from our health partners at Akron Children’s Hospital that our staff vaccinations WILL take place on Friday, Feb. 26. 

With this in mind, the following adjustment will be necessary next week, Feb. 22-26, for students and staff schedules:

Monday and Tuesday – REGULAR schedule for ALL students and staff;

Wednesday – CHANGED/ REVISED SCHEDULE with Hybrid group B reporting;

Thursday – REGULAR schedule for ALL students and staff;

Friday- Students DO NOT REPORT. Follow “Wednesday” schedule; NO PK.

Additionally we will follow this schedule again in a few weeks when we receive our second dose of vaccination.

In consultation with the Warren City Health Department, other local health officials and in review of recent data/statistics specific to the City of Warren/Warren City Schools, the district is delaying the return of Warren G. Harding High School students to the hybrid learning schedule.

However, the district is still planning and preparing for the return of our PK-8 students as communicated last week.

Warren G. Harding students in group A will return on Monday, January 25th.

Warren G. Harding students in group B will return on Thursday, January 28th.

WCS Families:
In consultation with the Warren City Health Department, other local health officials and in review of recent data/statistics specific to the City of Warren/Warren City Schools we are announcing the following tentative schedule for student learning:

• All students PK-12 will remain on full online remote learning for two more weeks.
• Cohort B students will tentatively return on Thursday, January 21, 2021.
• Cohort A students will tentatively return on Monday, January 25, 2021.
• Cohort A and B students may be combined to attend school four days per week as early as March 2021 dependent on health conditions and adult vaccinations in our community/with our school employees.

As we plan our return for students we will continue over the next two weeks to continue plans for some student activities to phase in such as our 21st Century after school program, as well as some extra-curricular and co-curricular groups, including meetings, practices and competition.

Food service operations will continue to provide meals to our students during this time and when hybrid students return we will go back to a feeding schedule as it was before we moved to full online/remote status.

We are concerned with the overall health in our community. Many students and staff members continue to be in insolation or quarantine for contact or positive test results, with varied symptoms and long term outcomes. We have been preparing for a vaccination opportunity for our staff in coordination with local health officials as soon as it becomes available and we believe this will help us to return our students and staff to the classroom later this year, hopefully as early as March.

The Warren City School Board of Education welcomed newly appointed member Jacqueline Shannon to the Board on Tuesday, Jan. 5.

The Board appointed Mrs. Shannon to fill the unexpired term of longtime board member Robert L. Faulkner Sr., who resigned Dec. 8.  

She was sworn in during the Board’s meeting on Tuesday.

“I am honored to begin my collaboration with this awesome team,” Mrs. Shannon said.

Mrs. Shannon is employed by Cleveland Clinic as a certified cancer registrar. She serves as treasurer of the Ohio Cancer Registrar Association (OCRA).

She has been a longtime parent and advocate of Warren City Schools. She and her late husband Patrick, a Warren graduate, raised their children in Warren and both were very active in the school community.

“Jackie’s career leadership roles, her volunteerism in the Warren community, her enthusiasm and testimony to the strength of the Warren City Schools’ academic programs and extracurricular offerings, in addition to the depth of her volunteer work within the district, made her the perfect candidate to fill the board seat,” said Board President Patti Limperos.

Mrs. Shannon served on the Bond Levy Committee, enthusiastically campaigning to encourage residents to support the building of new schools in Warren. She continued that commitment to school advocacy through her work and timeless dedication to a number of district parent organizations.

She is a past PTO President, having served on the committee for the district’s PK-8 buildings, and was an officer on the Warren G. Harding High School Band Boosters. She is a member of the pastor nominating committee at her church, where she serves as a deacon. 

Warren City Schools, in partnership with Inspiring Minds, has been awarded a $125,000 grant to support remote learning among students in grades 7-12.

The award, announced by Philanthropy Ohio and the Ohio Department of Education on Monday, is being provided through the Collaborative Fund for Educating Remotely and Transforming Schools (the Collaborative Fund).

The Warren City Schools and Inspiring Minds project are among 29 being funded through this second round of awards. The focus of the project is to support students academically, socially and emotionally by building strengths as it relates to careers, leadership development and community service.

“The Warren City Schools has had a long-standing relationship with Inspiring Minds,” said Associate Superintendent Wendy Hartzell. “This grant allows us to expand our partnership and opportunities for students in these unique learning environments.”

The students will receive support through Inspiring Minds during their remote learning days. Students will complete work and receive academic assistance as needed with adult support and supervision.

Through this collaboration, Warren City Schools and Inspiring Minds staff will evaluate which supports are demonstrating to be most effective for students involved in the program and how those supports may be replicated for students not directly involved.
