Worldwide Impact: Willard Destination Imagination Team Heading to Global Competition After Securing State’s Top Spot

The Willard PK-8 School’s Destination Imagination Team is representing Warren City Schools in the DI Global Competition in May!

Willard’s The Misfit Pencils claimed 1st place in the state, ensuring the team’s path to compete against other teams from around the world.

With over 1000 students on 124 teams from across Ohio, Warren City Schools took 5 teams to state level competition for Destination Imagination: four from Willard and one from Lincoln.

While all four teams showed up and made Warren proud, Willard’s The Misfit Pencils took the challenge of Fine Arts calling for students to show how something small or simple can make a big impact with a minimalist set. The team created a storyline that took on heavy topics such as bullying, depression, suicide, abuse, and neglect.

Exceeding Expectations: McGuffey Earns State Momentum Award

For the second consecutive year, the McGuffey PK-8 School has been recognized by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce with the state’s Momentum Award.

The honor recognizes schools that exceed expectations for student growth.

At the March 25, 2025, Warren City School Board of Education meeting Principal James Joseph led a presentation highlighting the school’s beach-themed year ‘Making Waves in Academic Excellence’ and notable achievements, including maintaining a 3-star overall rating on the school’s 2024 state report cards released this past fall.

The school retained a 4-star progress rating for exceeding growth expectations. Educators doubled 3rd-grade literacy proficiency and the school leaders are seeing “tangible proof that our strategies are working,” explained McGuffey curriculum liaison Kayla Pollifrone.
