Social and Emotional Learning in the Warren City Schools
The Warren City Schools is committed to providing both academic and social emotional learning for ALL its students. Social Emotional Learning complements the rigorous academic curriculum by recognizing that learning is relational. We all learn better when we feel we belong to the classroom and school.
Social and Emotional Learning involves teaching and facilitating skills that students and adults need to be successful at home, at school, in the workplace, and in life. When students and adults have social and emotional skills they are self and socially aware and have the ability to manage themselves both independently and while interacting with others. They can listen to perspective of others, use positive communication, be aware of cultural issues and differences, set and achieve goals, and take personal responsibility for their learning.
What does SEL look like in Warren City Schools?
- Climate in our schools: a safe and respectful learning environment that is well managed, supportive, and engaging with active participation. Use of CHAMPS and STOIC framework.
- Direct Instruction: Using a variety of evidenced based programs to deliberately teach the SEL skills students need to succeed in school.
- Infusion-Integrating SEL skills throughout the day and afterschool in all curricular and recreational practices.
- Programming: Sports, 21st Century After-School Programs, Men of Distinction, Student Ambassadors, Mentoring, Family Events, Field Trips, Art and Music Programs, Peer Meditation, Student Recreation and Wellness Center.
Direct Instruction of Social & Emotional Learning
Students learn Social and Emotional Skills by awareness and practice. SEL becomes a habit of practice when students, adults, and the entire school community remember that we use our SEL skills all day long. The Warren City Schools currently uses the following evidenced based SEL programs to support this work:
4 R’s: Reading, Writing, Respect, and Responsibility (PK-5) that uses literature and active learning to learn and practice the SEL skills of building community, managing emotions, solving problems, respecting others, and making a difference in the world.
Second Step K-8 that provides for essential human skills development giving educators tools to help students foster empathy, problem solve, and set goals for school and life.
School Connect-9th-12th grade provides our students with skills for navigating high school, building relationships, setting short and long term goals, and preparing for adulthood.
