Recently, the WGH anatomy students went on a field trip to a cadaver lab at Case Western Reserve University. They were able to experience a hands-on lab on cadavers. Teachers who escorted the kids included Ms. Hunter and Ms. Midgett who said some of the kids were a little surprised and off-put by the smells and sights, but overall it was an excellent experience for the students to see antimony in the real world. This was the first group taken to the cadaver lab, but hopefully, there will be many more.

This week the juniors of Warren G. Harding had SAT testing. On Wednesday, March 1, 2023, they began testing as soon as the morning bell rang. This was a long week here at WGH. The sophomores started the week with PSAT testing. All sophomores take the PSAT in order to prepare and see progress toward their eventual SAT score needed for graduation and college applications. Then later in the week, the juniors took the SAT which shut down half of the second floor and resulted in an early release for all students. Testing went very smoothly for both groups and they are very excited to get the results back soon. Next month will begin AIR testing here at the high school and students are currently preparing in all their classes. Best of luck Raiders this testing season!

 Freshman and sophomore students participated in the Mock Mega Moody Math Challenge Day on February 16, 2023. The event was organized by Mrs. Thornton and Mrs. Susko for freshmen and sophomores who tested gifted in math, reading/writing, or creative thinking.  Students participated in competitions, played games, escaped from an escape room, and had lunch from the Buena Vista!

Our Warren G. Harding Basketball team’s season has ended and their senior night, and last game, was on Valentine’s Day February 14^th at Warren G. Harding High School against the East Liverpool Potters with JV at 5:30 and varsity to follow. Our WGH basketball seniors are Robert Williams, Peyton Stevenson, Jacob Lawrence, Devin Boss, Khalil Williams, Donovan Herron, and James Curry. The theme for this game was Valentine’s Day, students came out in pink, red, and purple to support our boys and celebrate the seniors who will be moving on this year.

It is the time of the year when seniors must apply for scholarships to be eligible for financial rewards. There are many scholarship opportunities available for you right now! Some are more specific, such as scholarships for athletes or Italians, while others are general scholarships offered to any senior at the school. Senior Guidance Counselor Mr. Cheffo has posted various opportunities on his TEAMS page and has printed copies in his office available for pick up. Take advantage of these opportunities which are offered to you, and stop in to grab some copies soon!

When applying for scholarships it is very important that your essay is convincing as to why you will benefit from this opportunity. Many scholarships have a similar prompt, “Why I Need Scholarship Help” is the most common. When writing these types of essays, you want to include real and valid reasons why the scholarship at hand will benefit your educational and financial needs. Be sure to include any financial hardships, present and past, as well as how you will benefit from this scholarship. It is also a good idea to include your future plans. Best of luck Raiders.

This week was Valentine’s Day, some people hate this holiday while others like to make their significant others feel extra loved. Today is a day to appreciate the ones closest to you, the people you love. Whether you go out on a cute date, or stay at home and watch a movie, love is all around you. Here are Harding there were giant teddy bears, flowers and tons of candy exchanged and couples were happy as they celebrated across all the grades and floors here at Harding!

The pep rally for the basketball game against Howland on Tuesday, January 31^st. Each class was encouraged to wear their class color. The seniors wore red, the juniors wore blue, the sophomores wore green and the freshmen wore yellow. The pep rally was held 8^th period at the end of the day. The students showed up along with the jazz band, cheerleaders, and other winter sports teams to support the basketball team in the last game of the 2023 season. The jazz band played a song, the winter sports teams were announced and recognized and we wished the boys basketball team all the best against our rivals the Howland Tigers.

This week we encourage ladies at Warren G Harding to join softball. The season is quickly approaching, and the team is always looking for more talent to join the team. The Harding softball team has consistently had winning seasons and with many spots open this year, everyone is welcome to come train with the team and try out to be part of this great program. There is conditioning Monday and Wednesday at the varsity house, and practice Thursday and Friday in the small gym. Softball is a great way to stay active and gain better teamwork skills. Practices are open to all so if you are interested feel free to come. We are looking forward to a great season.

Mental health is growing to be an important topic in school and the community in general. A decent portion of the stress leading to poor mental health is school. Not even just for students, but also for teachers, the school environment and workload have become overwhelming and anxiety-inducing. Both students and teachers need time to practice self-care and mental health days available for much-needed relaxation and de-stressing. The workload continues to grow in the third quarter and so does the stress of facing down an entire month with no breaks. Having more days off or small breaks planned throughout the year would give students and staff more time to themselves: time to relax, and time to recollect before jumping back into their normal school and work duties. It would result in a happier, healthier school climate and less burnout in students and teachers.

January 27^th The Raider boys face Youngstown East High School. The student section is buzzing with excitement for tonight’s game. While the action on the court will certainly be center stage and exciting for all in attendance, tonight, the focus will be on the cheerleaders. There has been a definite rivalry between East and Harding cheerleaders that goes deep on both sides of the court. With East having a former Harding cheerleader as their coach they have been known to use some of our cheers against us throughout the years. We hope our cheerleaders show East who the originals are and that our Raider Boys beat East. Go Raiders!
